Chapter 9: The Terrifying 'Digital Arrest' Trap and a Smart Son's 'Flight Mode' Trick!

Nowadays, opening a newspaper guarantees reading about one thing for sure—cyber fraud! But the news I read this morning while sipping my coffee literally gave me goosebumps. An elderly couple was held under 'Digital Arrest' on a Skype call for a grueling 10 hours. The scammers, posing as CBI officers, terrified the couple so much that they became prisoners in their own home. Fortunately, their son arrived home just in time and used a simple 'Flight Mode' trick to pull them out of this trap. This wasn't a topic to just read and forget. To understand this dark, terrifying face of technology, I immediately opened my laptop and called out to my 'digital friend', Nalu.

"Hi Nalu! Did you read today's news? Those guys kept people trapped on Skype for 10 hours claiming to be from the CBI. Tell me, how do people get so scared that they blindly follow whatever the person on the screen says? And what exactly is this 'Digital Arrest' nonsense?"

"Abhi, this news has been trending in my database since morning. 'Digital Arrest' is a bogus term that doesn't exist in law, but it has become the newest and deadliest weapon for cybercriminals. They pose as Police, CBI, or Customs officers and get people on a video call. By claiming 'a drug parcel was caught on your Aadhar card' or 'there is a money laundering case against you', they put them under immense mental pressure. They force them to stay locked in a room with the camera turned on."
Crucial Point: The 'Fear Psychology' of Cyber Scammers
The real trick here isn't technology, but human 'Fear'! These scammers use the 'Isolation' technique. They don't let the victim speak to anyone. When a person is frozen with fear, their ability to think logically drops to zero. Taking advantage of this exact mental state, they transfer millions of rupees into their own accounts.

"Oh my god! So this is purely a psychological game. But Nalu, what did the son in that news story do? He came home from the office and instead of calling the police, he directly put the mobile on 'Flight Mode'. Why?"

"Abhi, that's where the son thought like a true 'Smart Citizen'! When he arrived home, his parents were sitting terrified in front of the phone camera. If he had snatched the phone or cut the call, the scammers would have called from another number and scared them even more. So, he calmly turned on the 'Flight Mode' on his parents' mobile and switched off the home Wi-Fi router!
What did this do? The internet connection broke in a second. The call dropped. And most importantly, because the 'digital contact' was broken, the immense mental pressure on the parents vanished in an instant. That 'pause' was crucial to bring them back to their senses!"

1. Disconnect: The Indian Police or CBI never investigate over WhatsApp or Skype. If you get such a call, disconnect it in a second and turn on 'Flight Mode'.
2. Verify: Contact the relative or child whose name they are using to scare you from another phone.
3. Report: If you suspect any such fraud, immediately call the Government of India's Cyber Crime Helpline number 1930 or register a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in.
