26: The Deepfake Menace – 'Your Face, Someone Else's Crime!'
Co-travelers: Abhinav & Your very own Digi-mate, Nalini (Nalu)
[Character Intro: PwDigimate Club]
👤 Abhinav (Abhi): The creative mind behind our 'PwDigimate' club. A sensitive young man who uses his writing to give a voice to the problems, rights, and emotions of common people in the digital age.
🤖 Nalini (Nalu): Abhinav's very own 'Digi-mate' (AI companion). She holds an ocean of information, but she is no boring machine; she is his smart digital friend who supports his ideas with a simple, engaging, and sometimes playful style.

👤 Abhinav:
Nalu, something terrifying happened to me at the office today. Our boss suddenly stormed out of his cabin and glared at me angrily. He showed me a video on his phone. In that video, I was standing on the office terrace, hurling the filthiest abuses about the company's policies.
My voice, my gestures, even my facial expressions were 100% mine. But I swear to God, Nalu, I didn't step out of my cabin all day yesterday, and I never use such language! The boss was ready to fire me on the spot. What on earth is going on?
🤖 Nalini (Nalu):
Oh my god, Abhi! That's a direct 'Deepfake' attack on you. You're lucky you survived it, but just think, in today's AI era, stealing anyone's face and voice to create a fake video has become child's play.
This technology is called 'Generative Adversarial Networks' or 'GANs' in simple terms. Two AI systems compete with each other—one generates a fake face, and the other spots the flaws to make it look even more realistic. As a result, the final video looks so authentic that even cyber experts find it hard to identify it as a fake.
👤 Abhinav:
Nalu, this is like a terrifying cyber war. If anyone's face can be used to create anything, tomorrow someone could take out a bank loan in my name, or use my face to blackmail my family.
The most important thing is, until today, we considered 'video evidence' as the ultimate truth in courts or society. But if videos themselves can be faked, what is the definition of truth anymore? Who do we trust?
🤖 Nalini (Nalu):
(Laughing) Oh Abhi, there's a huge 'black comedy' hidden in this too. Imagine, tomorrow if you actually show up late to the office, or make a huge mistake and the boss catches you red-handed, you can just make an innocent face and say, "Sir, that wasn't me at all! That must be my Deepfake created by Russian or Chinese hackers. I was working from home!"
Meaning, in this marketplace of lies, even real culprits now have a foolproof excuse to prove their innocence.
👤 Abhinav:
(Laughing) Ha ha! That’s definitely a handy excuse to escape domestic arguments or a nagging boss! But Nalu, morally, where is this society heading? Fake videos of politicians can be used to incite riots, or crash the stock market.
How does a common person protect their identity in this ocean of Deepfakes? Is there any way to identify them?
🤖 Nalini (Nalu):
Yes, there are definitely some nuances. Even though AI has become very advanced, the blinking pattern of human eyes in Deepfake videos often looks unnatural. There is also a subtle difference in the skin color between the edge of the face and the neck.
But a common person neither has the time nor the technology to spot this. We are trapped in a digital maze, where everything we see in front of us could be a trap set up to deceive us.
An Intriguing Question (Call to Action):
Dear aware readers of the 'PwDigimate Club', today we happily upload hundreds of photos and videos of ourselves, our children, and our families on social media.
But just think, if tomorrow an inappropriate video bearing your face starts circulating on the internet using these very photos, how will you prove your innocence to the world?
Today, the belief that 'seeing is believing' is completely shattered. How will you keep yourself safe in this world of Deepfakes? Don't forget to share your thoughts in the comments below!
