The Call of Nature and the Support of Technology
Introduction: A Lingering Question
It is morning time, there is a rush to go to work, and suddenly the tap water stops. News of water cuts by municipal corporations keeps coming and our anger increases. At such times, looking out the window, the vast oceans of the world appear before our eyes, but there is not a single drop of water to drink. Then a very natural and valid question arises in our minds— "Today in the twenty-first century, man has reached Mars, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has made the world crazy, yet why are we still dependent on the vagaries of rain? Has technology not solved this issue?"
Today we are going to find the answer to this question. Even though technology has advanced tremendously, the rules of nature have not changed. But in the future, how this technology, especially AI, will be able to get us out of this vicious cycle of water scarcity and erratic weather, we will take an interesting and scientific look at it in this article.
1. Cycles of Nature and the Limits of Artificial Rain
When we talk about water scarcity, the first solution that comes to mind is artificial rain (Cloud Seeding). Experiments to cause rain by spraying chemicals like silver iodide on clouds by planes have been going on in the world for many years. But there is a major catch in this. For artificial rain, it is absolutely essential to have clouds of the right size and already containing a lot of moisture in the sky. Man cannot create clouds from 'nothing' using technology.
Moreover, this method is highly expensive and there is no guarantee of its success due to the capriciousness of the weather. If we constantly keep tampering with the weather, we will have to suffer terrible consequences in the future. Nature maintains its balance. Therefore, there is a need for more sustainable solutions than this temporary measure.
2. Clouds in the Sky and Earth's Weather: Can Clouds be Pulled?
Many people wonder that such advanced technologies are available in space. We can accurately study stars and planets located millions of kilometers away. Then why can't we pull clouds by creating a vacuum or low pressure in the air?
The answer to this is very interesting. Things in space are precise because there is no air, no friction. But the Earth's atmosphere is a highly complex and erratic 'Chaotic System'. Here, wind direction, temperature, humidity, and air pressure keep changing every moment. If we artificially try to reduce air pressure and pull clouds from one place to another, nature's balance can be disturbed. By causing rain in one place, drought may occur in another. This will invite natural disasters. Therefore, direct interference with clouds like this can be dangerous.
3. Climate Change and New Technologies: The Magic of Laser Technology
If changing the natural environment won't work, then what other progress has technology made? Yes, scientists are looking for a highly innovative solution, which is 'Laser Technology' (Laser-Assisted Water Condensation).
In an international project called 'Teramobile', scientists conducted a test of condensing moisture in the air by shooting very powerful laser beams into the sky. These laser beams act artificially like lightning in clouds, helping water droplets to come together and form larger drops. This system is still developing, but making rain fall from clouds with the help of lasers is possible. However, this experiment works only in a specific environment. In the future, this technology could prove to be an extremely effective and eco-friendly solution to water scarcity.
4. AI and Earth's 'Digital Twin'
We must admit that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is bringing a major revolution in the environmental sector. But AI does not directly intervene in the weather; rather, it prepares humans to face crises by accurately forecasting the weather. In this, NVIDIA and some other advanced technology companies have started a wonderful project called 'Earth-2'.
What is Earth-2? Well, it is an exact virtual twin of our Earth! With the help of AI, a simulation of the Earth is created on supercomputers. This allows highly accurate and rapid forecasting of when cyclones will strike, where heavy rainfall will occur, and where droughts will happen. If we get information about potential natural disasters months in advance, we can avoid the loss of millions of lives and property by taking appropriate measures.
5. Google DeepMind: Weather Forecasting Model
Another great example of how AI meteorologists are creating a revolution is Google DeepMind's 'GraphCast' model. Traditional weather models take a lot of time and energy to run on supercomputers. However, this AI model from DeepMind accurately forecasts the weather in just a few minutes and using very little energy. This makes it easier for the administration to take immediate decisions according to weather changes, identify flood risks, and handle emergency situations.
6. Smart Distribution of Natural Energy: The Rise of Smart Grids
We have solar and wind energy available in abundance. But there is a huge difficulty in storing it and delivering it to the right places. So does this energy go to waste? This is where 'AI Smart Grids' come into play.
In the future, the AI-based energy distribution system will work efficiently according to real-time demand. AI can save wasted energy by looking at weather conditions, accurately predicting energy demand, and diverting energy supply accordingly. This will reduce our stress on nature.
Conclusion: Man's Need to Adapt to Nature
Man dreams of conquering nature through technology, but nature is something beyond our control. Today's technology and AI are empowering us not to defeat nature, but to adapt to it. Accurately forecasting weather using technology, efficient use of energy, and making disaster management more effective is the need of the hour.
